Students at a Sheffield university have been shortlisted for a leading law award.

Hallam University has been announced as a finalist in the national Law Society Excellence Awards 2014, in the excellence in pro-bono category.

Pro-bono refers to legal work undertaken, often voluntarily or at a reduced fee, as a public service.

The winners of the 10 team and six individual categories will be announced at a ceremony in London, hosted by BBC News presenter Mishal Husain, on October 9.

Law Society president Andrew Caplen said: “I am proud to call myself a solicitor, and who can blame me with such impressive peers? Despite tough economic times and challenging legislative changes, our legal profession is continuously innovating and succeeding.”
