Under strength Doncaster AC bring up rear in Bedford

Doncaster Athletic Club failed to improve on their British Men's Athletics League Division Four debut at the weekend.

The Keepmoat Stadium club, fifth in the meeting at Derby last month, finished last in the second of the four league meetings at Bedford on Saturday.

With several of their top names missing on the day it was always going to be a tough test for the league newcomers.

Doncaster’s only joy came in the steeplechase with Jardine Frazer (9 minutes 59.66 seconds) winning the 3,000m A race and teenager George Phillips (10.08.96) showing rivals a clean pair of heels in the B race.

Host club Rugby & Northampton (389 points) won the event from Derby & Mansfield (378) who won the opener. City of Portsmouth (309) were third with Brighton & Hove (270) finishing fourth,

Last at Derby, Reading (237) climbed above Doncaster (229). However, Doncaster (392) held on to fifth place overall at the midway point of the campaign which ends with the final fixture at the Keepmoat Stadium track in early August.

Derby & Mansfield (650) head the field from Rugby & Northampton (635).

Following last night’s 10k Sandall Beat Trail Race, the attention of local runners will switch to the annual Sprotbough 6.5k run on Sunday which forms the highlight of the village gala.

The race, which includes a medal for the first Sprotbrough male and female residents to finish, starts at 2pm. Entries will be taken on the day.
