A TOWN councillor who posted comments about Jewish people on social networking website Twitter has resigned.

Grant French, a member of the UK Independence Party, has stepped down from Stocksbridge Town Council after controversy over his remarks.

In an email to fellow councillors, he said: “I would like to offer my resignation to the council in light of recent Twitter comments I have made.

“I believe in free speech and this may not sit well in today’s politically correct world. I would hate anyone to confuse my views with those of the Town Council.”

Mr French was the Parliamentary candidate for UKIP in the Penistone and Stocksbridge at the 2010 General Election, coming fifth behind Labour’s Angela Smith, Conservative, Lib Dem and British National Party candidates.
