A major high street chain has announced that it will keep its stores open throughout the national lockdown.

Sir David Manning, British ambassador to the US from 2003 to 2007, said it would be “awkward” for Boris Johnson to establish a relationship with President-elect Joe Biden, given he had not met him before.

But he predicted that the UK-US relationship could be strong still under a Biden administration.

He told Times Radio: “I think the result is good for Britain. There is an awkward backdrop and it has been discussed a lot in the media over the last couple of days.

“It it clear that President-elect Biden was opposed to Brexit, he thinks it is bad for Britain and it is bad for Europe, but it is a fact and he will be a realist.

“I think it is awkward that Boris Johnson and the president-elect haven’t actually met, but they’re both good at outreach.

“I knew Joe Biden a little bit when he was a senator – he is very gracious, he values the bi-lateral relationship.

“There is usually quite a strong relationship between them (the prime minister and US president), that will have to be established now between Boris Johnson and Joe Biden but, given the commonality in our outlooks and interests in policy, that should be possible.”

Boris Johnson has said that with Joe Biden in the White House he believes there is “the real prospect of American global leadership in tackling climate change”.

The Prime Minister said: “Already you’ve got country after country lining up to support the ambition of net zero by 2050.

“So Japan came through, Korea came through, even China has come through with a plan to do it by 2060, which is absolutely fantastic for the world.

“I think now with President Biden in the White House in Washington we have the real prospect of American global leadership in tackling climate change.

“The UK, as you know, was the first major country to set out that objective of net zero by 2050, we led the way a few years ago, and we’re really hopeful now that President Biden will follow and will help us to deliver a really good outcome at the COP26 summit next year in Glasgow.”

Boris Johnson has congratulated Joe Biden for his US election victory.

The Prime Minister said: “I congratulate President-elect Biden very much on his victory and, of course, I congratulate Kamala Harris on being the first female Vice President, as she will become, in the history of the United States.

“The United States is our closest and most important ally, and that has been the case president after president, prime minister after prime minister – it won’t change.

“I look forward very much to working with President Biden and his team on a lot of crucial stuff for us in the weeks and months ahead: tackling climate change, trade, international security, many, many other issues.”
