Tyres provide a smooth surface on South Yorkshire trail

ALMOST 10,000 old car tyres will have a new lease of life - as part of the new all weather surface on a 2.1km stretch of the Trans Pennine Trail.

Barnsley Council’s contractors, KBI UK, have used the rubber to revamp the bridleway between Penistone and Thurlstone.

Work started in November and despite battling intense rain, sub zero temperatures and then snow, KBI UK are due to complete the project on schedule, this week.

The flexi-pave material allows water to drain through it, removing surface puddles.

Barnsley Council is funding the work with contributions from the European Union.

Graham Pell, of KBI, said: “Finished sections look fantastic and have already seen a major increase in the number of people using the trail.”
