Two Doncaster football fans arrested after England's latest match

Fans celebrating England safely making it through to the last 16 of the European tournament once again brought traffic to a halt on Silver Street as they congregated in the middle of the town centre road.

Revellers also set off flares during their post-match partying, despite being previously warned by police that it was dangerous to do so and people who did would face being fined or even arrested.

Superintendent Colin McFarlane, force lead for anti-social behaviour said nobody was hurt, but that was lucky.

“Large numbers of people gathered in Silver Street and the road was blocked for around 30 minutes following England’s final group stages game. We had officers in the area monitoring the situation until the crowds dispersed and while the majority of people behaved in a good-natured manner, we did arrest one person on suspicion of assault and one person for theft.

“It was also reported that once again some flares were let off. Fortunately, no-one was injured and no damage was caused but due to the large numbers of people, we were unable to identify the culprits.

“I would reiterate our warning that setting off flares is a public order offence and those found breaking the law will be dealt with.”

It was the second time officers had to be called to Silver Street in a matter of days, after previously attending on Thursday June 16 to deal with crowds there.

One flare landed under a child’s pram and a fan climbed on top of a stationary bus, but no arrests were made.

Supt McFarlane added: “We are in no way trying to stop people from enjoying themselves but we need to raise awareness about consequences of excessive drinking,”

“Alcohol impairs your judgement and you can go from happy and tipsy to loud and aggressive quite quickly.

“All we ask is that people are aware of their behaviour and continue to enjoy the football in a safe and responsible manner.”
