Two bikers killed in East Coast crash

TWO South Yorkshire men have been killed in a weekend motorbike crash as they returned from a trip to the East Coast.

The pair, from Swinton and Mexborough, were involved in a fatal collision with a car as they led a convoy of four bikes back from Cleethorpes on the B1203 at Swinhope near Market Rasen on Saturday, just after 4pm.

The rider was 43-year-old William Mansell, known as Bill, a lorry driver, of Manor Road, Swinton. His pillion passenger was Martin Paul Rhodes, aged 31, a pipe fitter, who is understood to have lived in Mexborough.

Both men were taken to hospital after the collision but died from their injuries.

Police said they believed their red Yamaha YZF R1 motorcycle was travelling in convoy with three other motorbikes from the Swinton area when they were in collision with a blue Renault Megane.

The pair were so seriously injured they were airlifted to Grimsby Hospital but both were later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Renault, a 29-year-old man from Immingham, was not injured. The road was closed until just after 10pm while the scene was examined and the wreckage cleared.

Sgt Dave Kay, of Lincolnshire Police’s road policing unit, has appealed for witnesses or anyone who was in the area and saw either the red Yamaha or the blue Renault Megane just before the collision.
