A MAN had to be sedated and put into an induced coma in hospital after suffering a horrific baseball bat attack in the street.
Police believe the 46-year-old was specifically targeted by his attackers, who struck early on Saturday evening.
He is thought to have been attacked by two men while he was on York Street, at its junction with West Street, in Mexborough at around 6pm.
He was hit in the face, resulting in multiple fractures and sustained a broken leg.
He is currently in Doncaster Royal Infirmary where he was described as being in a serious but stable condition.
Two men aged 34 and 40 have been arrested and are currently on police bail.
Det Con Matt Dixon said: “This was a nasty attack which has left the man with serious injuries.
“I would urge anybody who may have witnessed the incident or who has any information that could help us with the investigation to come forward.
Police are appealing for information on the assault as they try to piece together exactly what happened.
The victim is now conscious again and has spoken to detectives who are investigating the attack.
Police said the man knew one of his attackers.
Det Insp Dave Mayfield said: “He described being hit with a baseball bat, and there is an apparent history between him and one of his attackers.
“We want more witnesses to come forward, if they saw anything, heard anything, or saw someone with a baseball bat.”
Police believe there may have been people around in the area at the time of assault, possibly returning home from work, although it would have been dark at the time of the incident.
