Two arrests after gang of four assault Rotherham taxi driver in race hate attack

Two men have been arrested after a gang of four assaulted a Rotherham taxi driver in a suspected race attack.

Police were called to reports that a taxi driver had been assaulted in the Rowms Lane area of Swinton, Rotherham, at about 12.55am today (Tuesday, June 14).

It is believed that four men assaulted the 38-year-old taxi driver after he picked them up from a pub in Swinton Road.

The victim suffered ‘significant’ injuries as a result of the incident and was taken to hospital.

The four men then fled the area but a 20-year-old man and a 51-year-old man were arrested shortly after.

South Yorkshire Police Inspector Adrian Luscombe, said: “This was a nasty, unprovoked attack and we are treating it as racially aggravated.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw what happened to contact police.

“If you have any information, please call 101 quoting incident number 26 of June 14 2016.”
