LITTLE Grace Foers really is a Mini Star - she’s the first youngster to sign up for the St Luke’s Hospice Mini Stars 2km sponsored walk.

The six-year-old from Beighton in Sheffield will stride out at the fundraiser at Endcliffe Park with her mum Claire and dad Darren, both aged 38, and baby sister Alice, one.

This is the first year St Luke’s has organised the Mini Stars event as part of its annual Starlight Walk, which raises vital funds for the hospice.

The event, backed by The Star, takes place in Endcliffe Park on Saturday, May 12.

Proud mum Claire said: “Last year Grace took part in a charity event at Don Valley and it’s something she likes to do now.

“She understands what it’s raising money for and when we saw the information at the local library she was all for it because we’ve been affected by cancer a lot in our family.” Now Grace, a pupil at Beighton Nursery and Infants School, is gearing up to get into training and raise money for the children’s challenge.

The hospice’s first sponsored walk last year attracted almost 1,000 people and raised an impressive £65,000.

For the 2012 event, the St Luke’s team are hoping even more people will march from Endcliffe Park to Forge Dam and back - and they are set on raising more than £80,000.

St Luke’s, which was Britain’s first hospice outside London when it was set up 41 years ago, needs to raise £4 million a year to run its service for terminally-ill people.

The charity touches the lives of 1,500 patients a year, in every part of Sheffield, making their lives more comfortable in their final days, whether in their own home or at the hospice in Whirlow.

The 2km Mini Stars event, which is open to children aged four to eight and has a registration fee of £5, begins in Endcliffe Park at 4pm.

There will be music and a fun warm-up session for youngsters as well as games and nature trails along the way.

The Mini Star who raises the most funds will win a goody bag of prizes, a medal and the official title of Prime Mini Star.

The main Starlight Walk, for people of all ages, begins at 8.45pm. Individual registration costs £15 per person or £10 per person for groups of six or more, while young people aged five to 15 can also take part for £10. Entries close on Friday, May 4.
