FOUR disused rail tunnels which have been sealed for more than 40 years will be reopened this month as part of a £2.25 million project to improve one of the Peak District’s most popular footpaths and bridleways.

Work has taken place to instal lighting and surfacing suitable for cyclists, walkers and horse riders at Headstone Tunnel, Cressbrook Tunnel, Litton Tunnel, Chee Tor Tunnel on the Monsal Trail, near Bakewell.

The route covers part of the former Midland Railway which closed in 1968. Transport Minister Norman Baker is opening the tunnels to the public on Wednesday May 25.
