Police are appealing for witnesses after a five-vehicle collision on the A616 in Tankersley left a man and woman seriously injured.
The collision happened at the midway point between Thorncliffe Road and Tankersley roundabout.
Officers said traffic had been queuing along the A616 when an articulated HGV was in collision with the back of a Renault Scenic, which led to subsequent collisions with a Vauxhall Corsa, a Nissan van and another HGV.
The male driver of the Nissan van, an 18-year-old from Manchester, suffered a dislocated fracture to the arm and a serious lower leg injury.
He is being treated at Barnsley Hospital.
The female driver of the Vauxhall Corsa, a 31-year-old from Sheffield, was trapped inside her vehicle for an hour before being recovered. She is being treated at the Northern General for serious injuries.
A passenger in the Renault Scenic sustained whiplash and was taken to Northern General.
Other drivers received minor injuries but did not need hospital treatment.
The driver of the first HGV - a 60-year-old man from Cudworth - has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
Anyone who witnessed the collision at 4.40pm on Wednesday should call police on 101.
