MOURNERS are gathering today for the funeral of a dedicated Army veteran who helped hundreds of South Yorkshire armed forces members after they fell on hard times.

Ken Harrison, aged 77, was Barnsley Divisional Secretary and a voluntary case worker for SSAFA – Forces Help, which helps current and former service personnel to access support such as grants or specialist care.

Mr Harrison, who died on January 23, had been a sergeant in the 10th Royal Hussars, serving in Germany, Aden and Northern Ireland from 1953 to 1975.

He leaves two sons, a daughter, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Sharon Goodliffe, his daughter, said: “We are so proud of everything he has achieved especially with SSAFA for which he dedicated so much of his time.

“He would be down at his office in Barnsley every day. We will miss him dearly.”

David Brown, treasurer for SSAFA Barnsley, said: “For the past 22 years Ken has been a very committed volunteer with an excellent sense of humour and a caring manner.”

n Ken’s funeral is at Ardsley Crematorium in Barnsley at 3.30pm today. The family have asked for donations to be made to SSAFA or Cancer Research UK.
