Tributes paid to ‘treasured’ Sheffield gran who died after being injured in Benidorm

Angela Noriega, aged 57, of Manor Top, Sheffield, fell into a diabetic coma while on an annual girls’ weekend away in Benidorm in October.

She was found unconscious in her hotel room after a night out.

Angela spent several weeks in hospital in the popular tourist resort as her family launched a fundraising campaign to raise £20,000 and help bring the grandmother-of-two home.

They were given renewed hope they would get her home when they were offered a special medical road ambulance by Salop Medical Services, a family-run ambulance service based in Shropshire - which slashed the initial transportation costs.

Generous Star readers, along with Angela’s family and friends, raised almost £7,000 in just 24 days to fund the transportation costs after an online donation page was set up to co-ordinate the appeal.

Angela was taken straight to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital after arriving back in the city in a critical condition in early November but never regained consciousness.

She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in hospital on Tuesday, November 24.

Her son Jamie, aged 32, thanked everyone who had helped to bring his mother home and had supported the family.

He said: “She was a treasured partner, mum, nanny and sister.”

Angela’s family believe that she suffered a hypoglycemic attack, meaning her blood sugar levels were too low, after falling asleep and missing the trigger signs.

She was knocked unconscious after she fell and then suffered a severe head injury.

Angela, a former social worker, was popular and well known in the Manor area of Sheffield along with Mark Pierce, her partner of 20 years.

Friends rallied around Angela’s family after news of her accident emerged.

Individual donations on the fundraising page ranged from £5 to £1,000.

Angela’s big-hearted grandson Jayden also donated £5 to the cause from money that he was given for his fifth birthday.

Angela leaves behind partner Mark, son Jamie, daughter-in-law Kerry, step-daughter Stephanie and grandchildren Evie-Mae and Jayden.
