He said the man had attended his breakfast club on a Sunday morning where people donate cash to fund a cooked meal.

It's understood the man had been sleeping rough on and off for around 12 years.

"What I've been told by a few people is he just got his head down for the night with a couple of other lads," Anthony said.

"One of the lads he was with checked on him by shaking him but he didn't wake up.

"He was a quiet bloke, he wasn't in your face and he kept himself to himself.

"It's a tragedy. I feel like myself and everyone involved in homelessness has failed him. What does it say about society and Sheffield in 2018? It's really sad."

People posting on social media also paid tribute to the man known as 'Honda'.

Emma Clarkson said: "Only talking to you Monday morning and that smile you always had, no matter what life threw at you. Such a lovely guy always had a laugh with him. Rest in peace Honda."
