Tributes paid to '˜brilliant and wonderful' gran killed in Sheffield social club incident

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a '˜brilliant and wonderful' grandmother killed following an incident at a popular Sheffield social club.

Flowers, cards and photographs have been laid outside the Manor Social Club on City Road following the death of a 50-year-old woman, who has been named locally as Gillian Poulson.

Gillian is understood to have been a mother-of-two and a grandmother and is believed to have worked at the social club in the past.

She died in hospital in the early hours of Monday morning after sustaining fatal injuries in an incident at the club that police have described as an ‘altercation’.

An 18-year-old Sheffield woman was arrested on suspicion of murder after Gillian’s death. The woman has since been bailed.

One message left with a bunch of flowers outside the club said: “I know I will never ever forget you, so shocking, so sad, such a brilliant and wonderful friend.”

Carl White said: “I’ve known Gillian since I was three when I first met her son at nursery and she was a really lovely and fun lady, it’s so sad to hear what’s happened.

“I hope justice will be done but that doesn’t help how the family must be feeling at this time. My heart goes out to them.”

Karen Worton said: “The Manor Club was my home for 21 years up until 1998, Gillian once worked there and her sister too.”

Lesley Plant added: “RIP Gillian, only ever met you the once at Badkins but you certainly were the life and soul, full of fun and always smiling. My love goes to your family and friends.”

Police confirmed a 50-year-old woman had died outside the social club and appealed for witnesses to the ‘altercation’ or anyone with information about what happened outside the club to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector David Stopford, the investigating officer, said: “The woman was admitted to the Northern General Hospital in the early hours of Monday morning and sadly died a short time later.

“We know she was at the Manor Estates Social Club, where an alleged altercation has taken place. I urge witnesses to come forward so we can establish the circumstances leading to her death.”
