Tribute to wildlife fan

A WILDLIFE campaigner called ‘the Warrior of Wath Ings’ who died aged 90 last year, will be remembered this weekend by the RSPB at the unveiling of a bird-watching hide memorial in Barnsley.

Harold Crookes, of Wath-upon-Dearne, lobbied local interest groups and worked to protect the Wath Ings of Dearne Valley from the threat of development and misuse.

The memorial, hand-carved from a felled ash tree, will be unveiled at 3pm by his family and friends at the RSPB Old Moor visitor centre near Barnsley.
