Residents in Nether Edge have collaborated with Henderson’s Relish to create 150 special Save Sheffield Trees bottles of the sauce to sell for their campaign.

They are fighting the axing and replacement of 92 highway trees - many earmarked because they are said to be damaging pavements - in the leafy suburb as part of Sheffield Council’s Streets Ahead road resurfacing project with Amey.

They want alternative engineering solutions to be used and for kerb rules to be relaxed to retain more trees.

Carly Mountain, of Save Nether Edge Trees, said: “Henderson’s Relish is a heritage label that has been around for a long time, so it fits very well with our tree campaign. The trees are part of our heritage too.”

One tree earmarked for felling in Nether Edge made headlines after residents identified it was a rare elm tree and also home to a rare colony of butterfly. The council has said that it will be ‘reassessed.’

Local campaigners are also aiming to gather 5,000 signatures on an online petition so the city-wide tree controversy will be debated again by Sheffield Council.

Carly added: “The level of support in Nether Edge has been fantastic.”

The Henderson’s bottles are on sale at Mr Pickles, on Abbeydale Road, Zed’s health food shop in Nether Edge, Jonty’s on Sharrow Vale Road and the Famous Sheffield Shop, Ecclesall Road.
