Work on the controversial tree replacement programme was halted last month following clashes between protesters and Sheffield Council contractor Amey staff on Meersbrook Park Road, which resulted in a number of arrests and a security worker having his wrist broken.

Sheffield City Council said work was underway on Thornsett Road, Nether Edge, this morning after police promised to have more officers available on the scene of works.

Campaigners said they 'regretted' police having to step up resources but pledged to continue with protests.

Chris Rust, co-chairman of Sheffield Tree Action Groups, said he expected protesters to return to the streets as there was an 'awful lot of anger' against Sheffield Council's £2.2 billion highway improvement contract with Amey.
