RESIDENTS in Sheffield are being urged to leave their car at home – and win prizes.

A green travel campaign with a difference will launch at this years’ Exposed Awards at the o2 Academy on Thursday 14 March in a bid to inspire people to leave the car at home and take alternative means of transport.

#notdriving has been set up by a team of Sheffield creatives to tackle bad travel habits with the approach that saving the environment should be fun. It is offering prizes such as VIP treatments, product giveaways and tickets to the hottest gigs and cultural happenings around, in return for people making greener travel choices.

From 14th March, monthly prize draws will take place on making it a destination website for commuters across Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Simply take alternative means of transport – be it public transport, walking, cycling or smarter driving (car sharing) – and pledge the number of car miles you would have driven on {http:|||visit} to win an assortment of fantastic prizes.

The scheme has received the backing of many cultural hotspots including Tramlines and Detestival festival, City Hall, the o2 Academy, nightclub Paris, cocktail bar Beg Borrow Steel, indie club night Propaganda, live music venue The Harley, and independent fashion brand Skull & Bones Boys Club to name a few, all keen to get behind the fun yet serious message of #notdriving.

#notdriving was initially rolled out as a pilot scheme at Olympics’ festival Sheftival where people were inspired to ditch the car en route to the festival and pledge the saved number of car miles, online, using the not driving hash tag. Over 10,000 miles were pledged on Twitter and Facebook by festival goers, and travel partners Supertram and City Taxis, offsetting a staggering carbon footprint of 2.74 tonnes.

#notdriving has been set up by The Rootstock Trading Company and receives support from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) to encourage wider use of sustainable travel throughout South Yorkshire.

The long term vision of #notdriving is to raise awareness of damage caused to the environment by carbon emissions and to ultimately change the travelling habits of South Yorkshire’s residents, making it a healthier and safer place to live.

With many PR stunts and surprises planned for the year, it’s likely you’ll be seeing #notdriving everywhere you go – just make sure it’s not from the driving seat of your car!
