West Ham United fans ‘stranded’ on M1 after crash as they travel to Sheffield United clash

Fans of West Ham United have run into trouble on their way up to Sheffield for the Blades match at Bramall Lane this evening (January 10).

All lanes on the M1 southbound between junctions 15a for Northampton to 16 for Daventry were shut following the incident at around 2pm.

Northbound lanes were also closed. All lanes have since reopened. Congestion is still heavy on the with traffic police managing the lanes.

West Ham fans using the M1 to travel up to Sheffield from London have taken to social media to express their frustration.

One tweeted: “Any West Ham fans travelling up avoid the M1 air ambulance has landed and both sides are closed!”

Normal conditions are expected to resume on the road around 5.30pm today.

Northamptonshire Police tweeted: "Officers are currently at the scene of a serious road traffic collision on the M1, between junction 15a and junction 16.

"Please seek an alternative route until further notice."
