South Yorkshire Police’s latest Close Pass initiative took place on the A57 between Malin Bridge and the Peak District, close to Ladybower Reservoir, with police pedalling for nearly 80km as they tackled the route’s lung-bursting inclines over three hours.

Drivers must allow a gap of at least one and a half metres to safely overtake cyclists, with more space required at higher speeds, and officers stopped those who got too close.

On Thursday, 13 drivers were stopped and given advice, with 34 facing prosecution.

Another 16 drivers were issued with reports for leaving their vehicle in a dangerous position, 10 for contravening double white lines, two for going through red lights and one for using a mobile phone at the wheel.

Sharing the results on social media, officers from Sheffield North West neighbourhood policing team said: “Hopefully operations like this will improve the driver standards, and educate people that their poor driving and needless impatience can have consequences.”
