Highways England has announced the closure of the southbound stretch between Junction 31 for Aston and 32 for the M18 turn off.
There were some lane closures initially, which allowed traffic to pass the crash scene, but the full southbound stretch has now been closed.
Emergency services are at the scene but full details on the nature of the collision have not yet been released.
