Two lanes are closed on the major motorway between J30 and J31 between Barlborough and Aston after a car caught fire.
Growing queues of up to 30 minutes long have been reported on the southbound M1 tailing back several miles from Woodall to Bramley.
It comes as drivers are being warned against long car journeys on what will be the hottest day in decades.
