Motorists have reported miles of tailbacks heading into Sheffield city centre and out towards the M1 at junction 33 for Catcliffe after the crash, near the Handsworth junction.
People have been asked to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident.
South Yorkshire Police said emergency services were called at around 3.45pm.
It aded four vehciles had been in collision with each other, blocking the road.
Police said the crash was believed to have been caused by a dog in the road.
The dog has been contained.
