The latest temporary changes introduced by Sheffield City Council include closing the parking bays on Fulwood Road which serve Broomhill’s shopping precinct and nearby businesses. Sections of footpaths on Fulwood Road, Glossop Road and Peel Street have also been widened to help pedestrians maintain social distancing.

A Council spokesperson said: “We haven’t taken this decision lightly and do understand the impact the removal of these popular parking bays will have on drivers. However, after careful consideration and consultation with local ward members, we believe this is the best way to keep people safe and socially distanced while they use businesses in this popular area.”

The spokesperson said the changes may become permanent if they work well and local businesses and residents are happy with them, subject to a full consultation process.

People who work in the parade of shops claim this could severely affect their business.

One of them, Stuart Nye, described the situation as ‘ludicrous’ and claimed it could sound the death knell for many businesses which were already struggling to cope with Covid.

He said: “I think the council has really dropped a clanger on this one. Without the facility for short term parking all the shops here could be in danger.

“I think they are ramming through a project that has been defeated in the past, saying it is temporary when it won’t turn out to be anything of the sort.”
