Sheffield drivers warned to urgently check their driving licence or face a £1,000 fine

Drivers in Sheffield have been warned they may have out-of-date driving licences and could face a huge fine.

Moneysavingexpert.com has warned that around two million people now have an out of date licence and could face a fine of up to £1,000 if it is not renews.

As part of its coronavirus help measures, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) gave drivers whose licences expired between 1 February 2020 and 31 December 2020 an automatic 11-month extension from the date of expiry to renew them.

However, with the amnesty now over, many people whose licences were due to renew last year, or if their licence expired after December 2020 must renew it or face a fine.

Drivers have also been warned to check the photocard licence expiry date, check the correct address is on it and check their name or gender is correct if it has changed.

How do I renew my licence?

There are three ways to apply:

Online. You can apply online at Gov.uk, providing you've a valid UK passport.By post. Alternatively, anyone can get forms (known as 'D1 pack') from most post offices, or order one from the DVLA website (in the 'Other ways to apply' section).In person at selected post offices. The Post Office charges an extra £4.50 to take your photo on top of the £17 fee, but the total also includes posting your application to the DVLA.

How much does it cost?

There's a £14 fee for each renewal if you do it online, £17 if you renew by post.#

A spokesperson said: “You should be sent a reminder and form about two months before expiry. However, as many miss this or forget, it's well worth making a note of when yours expires.”

DVLA chief executive Julie Lennard said: “This extension will make it easier for drivers who need to update their photocard licence with a new photograph.

“This means as long as they have a valid licence, drivers will be able to continue to make essential journeys.

“The extension is automatic so drivers do not need to do anything and will be sent a reminder to renew their photocard before the extension ends.”
