'Severe delays' on the M1 near Sheffield and Chesterfield due to broken down lorry

Drivers on the M1 are facing ‘severe delays’ caused by a broken-down lorry on the slip road on the northbound side of J31.

The lorry stalled at around 15.25 this afternoon (February 21), at J31 Sheffield/Worksop, causing a lane on the slip road to be closed.

Although the lorry had been removed from the slip road by 15.55 and the lanes have all been reopened, delays of up to 20 minutes are still being reported.

Traffic is queuing all the way back to J29 near Chesterfield and Mansfield, the AA has reported.

Highways England has said that normal traffic conditions are expected to resume between 16:45 and 17:00.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys if they need to travel on that route.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.

Average speed in the affected area is reported to be 20mph.
