'Serious police incident' triggers M1 closure between Sheffield and Rotherham

Drivers heading for the M1 are being warned that the motorway has been closed between Sheffield and Rotherham due to a ‘serious police incident’.

The motorway is closed in both directions between J32 Sheffield and J33 Rotherham this evening (Sunday, September 13).

The nature of the incident is not yet known, but Highways England said it was ‘serious’ and drivers should expect heavy delays.

Traffic cameras at the scene are showing long tailbacks as the authority work with South Yorkshire Police to clear the incident and release trapped traffic.

Normal traffic conditions aren’t expected to resume until 11.15pm at the earliest.

The diversion in place is as follows:

Northbound diverted traffic should follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol, and exit at J31.

Southbound traffic should follow the solid triangle diversion symbol, and exit at J33.

Both routes are via the A630 and A57.
