Residents have urged Sheffield Council to make a city road safer and slower after a motorcyclist died in a crash.

Sam Pickering, 20, suffered fatal injuries when his motorbike crashed in Langsett Road North, Oughtibridge, on April 16.

The accident happened on a stretch of road less than half a mile long where the speed limit is 50mph.

Just around the corner the limit drops to 30mph as the road reaches Oughtibridge, and travelling north the limit comes down to 40mph as Langsett Road North becomes Main Road in Wharncliffe Side.

People living near the stretch of road say they have repeatedly raised safety concerns with Sheffield Council, but little has been done.

Justin Smith, of Newstead Avenue, said he had only lived in the area for about a year but had already heard of or witnessed several ‘serious’ accidents.

“I thought it was about time something was done,” he said.

“My neighbours said they had been trying for years, but the council wasn’t interested.”

Mr Smith questioned the council’s figures, which say there have been three reported accidents with injuries in the past five years. Only one was classed as ‘serious’.

“I can’t understand why there are so few recorded, because there have been loads,” he said.

The council’s figures were released before the accident which led to Mr Pickering’s death last month.

Mr Smith said: “The reason there are so many accidents is because it’s a really tight bend, and it gets tighter as you go around it.”

In response, the council’s head of strategic transport and infrastructure Tom Finnegan-Smith said: “We were deeply saddened to hear of the fatal accident at this location, and our thoughts are with the family of the person involved.

“An investigation is currently taking place involving road safety engineers and South Yorkshire Police, and we will follow any recommendations it makes.”
