Police reveal 'multiple vehicles' were involved in serious M1 crash near Sheffield

South Yorkshire Police said: “Emergency services were called at 6.35am this morning following reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles on the M1 southbound carriageway.

“The M1 southbound carriageway is currently closed between junction 32 and 31 while emergency services respond to the incident."

Full details on the nature of the collision have not yet been disclosed.

Highways England said traffic is queuing for several miles.

A diversion is in place in a bid to reduce the tailbacks.

The agency said: “The M1 is currently closed from J33 to J31 with delays of at least 30 minutes covering several miles of the southbound carriageway.

“This closure is due to a road traffic collision and Highways England has resources deployed working hard to restore normal conditions as soon as possible.

“For traffic approaching the closure locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and may potentially have to re-route your journey.

“If travelling towards this area from much further afield, you may wish to change your strategic route, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road variable message signs and media.

“Diversion route details and guidance is as follows via the ‘Solid Triangle’ symbol. Exit the M1 at J33. At the roundabout take the third exit onto A630 (Sheffield Parkway) and proceed along this road for approximately three miles to the junction with the A57.

“At the junction take a left turn onto the A57 and proceed along this road for approximately six miles to J31 to resume your journey.

“Road users on the M18 are advised to take the M1 north until J33 and then follow the diversion above.”
