Motorists warned as taxis spotted blocking Sheffield cycle lane

It comes as two taxis were pictured obstructing a contraflow cycle lane on Sandford Grove Road, Nether Edge which locals say vehicles regularly block. One person said they had “never seen it free”, and complained the situation is the same with the contraflow lane on Fulney Road and Frickley Road.

Sheffield City Council said civil enforcement officers are “stepping up action against dangerous and obstructive parking across the city” now people are able to travel more freely.

The local authority is encouraging people to travel by foot or bike and has pedestrianised some of the busiest roads in the city centre to facilitate active travel and social distancing.

Councillor Bob Johnson, cabinet member for transport and sustainability at Sheffield City Council, said: “The data shows that we’re now back up to 68 per cent of normal traffic levels and we believe this will rise even further from 15 June.

“As a Council, we’re working hard to introduce new measures to make it easier for people to walk and cycle to their destinations, but we know that this is not always possible and so expect roads to become much busier by the end of the month.”

City Taxis said it will follow up the complaint with the drivers in question, who the company said are self-employed.

The Council also confirmed free key worker parking in off-street Council car parks will come to an end on 15 June but the free parking pass scheme will continue.
