Thorne Road was shut in both directions between Sandall Park and Sainsbury’s near to Clay Lane for a week – but the road was back open for vehicles again yesterday.

The road was shut while piling work took place for the installation of a new railway bridge and drivers faced a number of diversions while the closure was in place.

The works are part of an ongoing two year scheme to improve the A630 West Moor Link road which connects junction 4 of the M18 to Edenthorpe.

The scheme aims to improve journey times on the A630/A18 corridor by replacing the A18 Thorne Rd railway over bridge with a 'widened and deepened prefabricated bridge' as well as alterations to Thorne Road itself, including widening of the route and alterations to roundabouts.

Through to the end of June 2020 the road will be single lane in both directions as the work progresses.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said: “The road is reopened, but the lane closures need to start again.

“This will allow us to carry on getting things ready for the new bridge to be installed later in the year.”

The bridge is set to be installed before the end of 2020.
