Sheffield City Council has installed 14 metres of safety fencing near to a pedestrian crossing on the side of Bochum Parkway, close to the A61, Chesterfield Road.

The new guardrail is the only one of its kind in the UK to withstand a collision with a vehicle and can stop a 2.5-tonne pick-up truck travelling at 30mph.

Mark Stone, managing director of Securiscape, which created the product, said: “All of our products are designed in conjunction with national security experts to prevent deliberate vehicle-borne attacks on buildings and people, and our pedestrian guardrail was originally developed with that in mind.

“However, it is equally capable of preventing accidents, and we are very proud to see it being used to improve the safety of pedestrians in Sheffield.”
