A stretch of the M1 was sealed off in South Yorkshire today after a refridgerated lorry caught fire.

The blaze meant Highways England were forced to close the southbound carriageway of the motorway near Barnsley this afternoon (Tuesday, January 26).

The northbound carriageway was also closed for a while due to debris shooting over the central reserve.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service worked hard to get the blaze under control, using a foam system to put the fire out.”

The driver managed to get to safety and is understood not to have been harmed in the incident, but it was a ‘terrifying experience’ for them nonetheless, said the authority.

Highways England added that motorists should be aware that two lanes remain closed at the scene while recovery and resurfacing work continues overnight.
