First picture released from M1 crash scene near Sheffield as police confirm one casualty

Police have confirmed that one casualty has been taken to hospital after a serious collision on the M1 near Sheffield.

Emergency services were deployed to the crash scene between Junction 31 for Aston and 32 for the M18 at 6.35am today.

In a statement, the force said: “The M1 southbound carriageway is currently closed between Junction 32 and 31 while emergency services respond to the incident and police carry out enquiries.

“A diversion is in place and motorists are advised to plan alternative routes.

“One person is believed to have been injured and has been taken to hospital. The severity of the injuries is not known at this time.”

Motorists are being diverted off the motorway at Junction 33 for Sheffield.

Highways officers are involved in an operation to turn round all the vehicles trapped in tailbacks on the motorway.
