Police have named the South Yorkshire pensioner killed after a car ploughed into a wall.

Ruth Elizabeth Cocker, aged 85, from Birdwell, Barnsley, was a passenger in a grey Ford Mondeo which crashed on Sheffield Road, Hoyland Common, at 11pm on Wednesday.

She was rushed to hospital by ambulance but could not be saved and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the car - a 67-year-old man - escaped with minor injuries.

Two other passengers in the car - women aged 82 and 77 - also suffered minor injuries.

A police probe into the collision is now underway.

Officers investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident want to hear from witnesses or anyone with information.
