The junction between Hill Street and Bramall Lane will no longer be accessible to motorists in order to make the road ‘a safe and an attractive corridor’ for travel, Sheffield Council has confirmed.

In a statement, the council said: “Between 2012 and 2018 there were 21 recorded injury accidents at this location where the complex nature of the junction and the demands on drivers to make decisions and undertake manoeuvres safely in a short period of time were a contributory factor.”

Although cars will no longer be able to access Bramall Lane via the Woodhead Road and Hill Street junctions, a two-way cycle link will be maintained.

Lockable bollards will also be put up to allow coaches transporting away fans to Bramall Lane stadium to drive through the closure in a westerly direction only, under escort.

Uncontrolled parking sections on nearby Harwood Street will also be replaced with pay and display bays as part of the changes.

Councillor Douglas Johnson, Green Party Councillor for City Ward, described the junction as an ‘accident blackspot’.

He said: “As well as the recorded incidents there are many near misses which are usually pedestrians and cyclists.

“If a cyclist gets bumped but not badly hurt it often goes unrecorded.

“Because it’s a five-way junction you are looking in so many different directions at once. It’s unfamiliar to people.”

The roadworks will be complete by the end of March, a council spokesperson confirmed.
