'Abandoned' van blocks tram and bus routes through Sheffield

Tram and bus routes in Sheffield were left blocked after a van was “abandoned” on the road.

Stagecoach Supertram said services to and from Hillsborough in both directions were unable to get through due to a driverless Volkswagen van on Langsett Road.

A police officer at the scene said they believed the van’s handbrake had failed, causing it to roll downhill from Victor Street.

The road was blocked from shortly after 5pm, with three trams queued as well as buses.

The travel provider tweeted just before 6pm to confirm the vehicle had been removed – but it has caused delays.

Services to Malin Bridge and Halfway are affected, while Service 57 is currently diverted via Penistone Road.

A Stagecoach Supertram tweeted at 5.09pm: “Due to abandoned vehicle on Langsett Rd, trams are currently stood in both directions and unable to enter/leave Hillsborough.”

They later posted: “Abandoned vehicle moved and we are now running through as normal but with delays. Please bear with us whilst we reform the service.”
