A South Yorkshire MP has called for a free-trade agreement to be implemented between the European Union and United States.

John Healey, Labour MP for Wentworth and Dearne, said the trade and investment agreement between the EU and US could set a ‘gold standard’ for future bilateral and multi-lateral deals.

Talks on creating a free-trade agreement which could scrap the remaining tariffs and regulatory barriers are already under way, the House of Commons was told.

Mr Healey said: “I just say that together, as the two biggest economies, we have the opportunity through this deal to set standards, to set regulations that will become the gold standard of any future bilateral and multi-lateral deals.”
