A MAN died after he was struck by a tram as he ran across a South Yorkshire road.

The 37-year-old, from Upperthorpe, Sheffield was attempting to cross Netherthorpe Road outside a petrol station 50 metres away from the junction with Morpeth Street when he was involved in the collision.

Police said the tram involved was travelling towards the Brookhill roundabout at the time.

Its driver, a 38-year-old woman from Westfield, was unharmed.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “At around 3.10pm on Saturday, a 37-year-old man from Upperthorpe, Sheffield was reported to have been crossing over Netherthorpe Road, uphill, 50 metres west of the junction with Morpeth Street outside a petrol station.

“The man is thought to have been crossing the road and approached the central tram crossing facility at the same time as a tram moved toward the crossing towards Brookhill roundabout. As the man ran over the crossing the tram’s nearside collided with him.

“The man suffered fatal injuries.”
