The Sheffield City Trust Group, which operates 17 sports and entertainment facilities including the City Hall and English Institute of Sport, has been accredited with the ISO 50001 energy certificate by the International Organization for Standardization.

The ISO 50001 is the latest energy management system and enables organisations to monitor their energy consumption in finer detail than ever before. After application and three audit stages, the Trust was granted the ISO 50001 in recognition of its commitment to reducing energy usage, in line with the government’s 2020 plan.

It is the first sports and leisure trust in the country to achieve the energy standard and follows on from the Trust’s achievement of the Carbon Trust Standard in 2014 – which was also a first by a sports and leisure trust.

Sean Midgley, energy and environmental manager at SCT, said: “This latest news reaffirms our commitment to reducing energy usage across the SCT group. As a sports and leisure charity, and because of the nature of our business, we naturally use a lot of energy to maintain the high standards of our facilities.

“This means that we constantly have to work to bring down the amount of energy we use, and the new ISO 50001 energy management system will be even more effective in helping us continue to do that. We’ve already achieved a lot in terms of energy usage reduction, but we can, and will, be doing even more.”

SCT has already achieved its five-year energy reduction target of 15 per cent in just three years and is on course to achieve its next target for 2030 by the year 2020.
