Tragedy as woman dies after falling from M1 bridge between Sheffield and Rotherham

A woman has died after falling from a South Yorkshire motorway bridge and being struck by a vehicle.

The 39-year-old, who has not yet been named, died in the incident on the M1, between junctions 32 for Thurcroft and 33 for Catcliffe, last night.

South Yorkshire Police said reports of a woman sat on the bridge were received by the force just before 8pm.

The motorway was closed in both directions for a number of hours, causing severe tailbacks, while emergency services dealt with the incident but both carriageways have since re-opened.

Pleasley Road, between Whiston and Ulley, was also closed.

Officers investigating the incident want to hear from witnesses, including motorists with dash cam footage

South Yorkshire Police said: “An investigation has been launched after a woman was reportedly struck by a vehicle on the M1 last night.

“Just before 8pm, police received numerous reports of a woman sat over the railings on a bridge over the M1, between junction 32 and 33.

“The 39-year-old woman is believed to have fallen from the bridge and collided with a vehicle in the carriageway below, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Her family have been informed.

“We are keen to hear from any motorists who were travelling on the M1 yesterday evening who witnessed the incident, or the woman prior. We are especially keen to hear from anyone with dash cam footage.”
