Routes on to one of Sheffield’s busiest roads are blocked off this morning as police search for a gunman - causing traffic chaos.

A man was seen with a gun entering a disused brewery in Neepsend Lane, Neepsend, at 5.15am today.

Officers are now searching the area looking for him and armed police are involved in the operation, while roads nearby are closed.

Those at the scene said streets, including Penistone Road which is the second busiest road in Sheffield after The Parkway, were more congested than usual.

There have been major delays around the Neepsend Lane area.

A police spokesman said: “The junctions at Penistone Road and Rutland Road onto Neepsend Lane are both closed as well as Burton Road and Douglas Road.

“Please avoid this area this morning if possible as traffic will be significantly heavier than usual and delays are very likely.”

Travel South Yorkshire also said that traffic was being ‘diverted via alternate narrow routes, likely to cause significant traffic at Shalesmoor and Bridgehouses, delays.”

Trams through Sheffield are currently running as normal.
