With Black Friday this week, the biggest shopping weekend of the year, and Christmas shopping to begin shortly after, the disruptions come at a busy time.

Stuart Nichols at Amey said: “Whilst we know weekends in December will be busier than usual, in the run up to the festive period, it’s crucial we get these works completed in good time, so that people can start seeing the benefits of the project ahead of the New Year.”

Streets Ahead is the largest highway investment contract ever seen in Sheffield, and is worth £2bn.

The work will include the resurfacing of Flat Street, Fitzalan Square and Esperanto Place. It is set to take place from 8pm on Friday 29 November to 5:30am on Monday 2 December, 8pm on Friday 6 December to 5:30am on Monday 9 December, and 8pm on Friday 13 December to 5:30am on Monday 16 December.

The roads will be completely closed with no parking or loading, and are said to “improve links and safety” in the city centre.

The last part of Pond Street before Flat Street (after the NCP carpark entrance, including the turn into the Transport Interchange) will also be closed during these periods.

People planning to travel into the city centre by bus during these works are encouraged to visit www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/disruptions for information on how their journey may be affected.
