The shocking number of people killed or injured on Woodhead Pass between Sheffield and Manchester

The A628 Woodhead Pass is notorious for congestion and closures, especially during the winter months when snow often cuts off the vital link between the two cities.

The single carriageway route, which winds its way through the Peak District, is also known for the number of crashes.

Highways England, which is responsible for the majority of the Woodhead Pass, has now revealed how many collisions there have been, and how many people have been killed or injured in those accidents.

In just five years, between the start of 2014 and the end of 2018, 169 people were injured in 88 separate crashes on the 13.5-mile stretch from the Gun Inn at Hollingworth in the west to Flouch Roundabout where it meets the A616 in the east.

Two of those people died – both in the same crash in 2018 – and another 35 were seriously injured, statistics obtained using the Freedom of Information Act reveal.

In 2018, the most recent year for which figures are currently available, 14 people were killed or seriously injured – twice as many as in any of the previous four years.

However, the 16 accidents recorded that year was the second lowest since 2014.
