Drivers have also been warned to take extra care as the cold weather could lead to damage to the road surfaces as well as icy conditions.

A warning on the council’s website says: “During cold winter weather existing potholes often get worse and new potholes are easily created by water seeping beneath the road surface when snow and ice melt.

“We carry out regular inspections and always inspect potholes reported to us by the public, taking action to fix them when needed.

“In icy conditions, all pavement and road surfaces can be slippery. We advise everyone to take extra care during winter weather and use the grit bins provided.”

Sheffield council’s winter service runs from 1 October to 30 April. 21 staff and 19 gritters are on standby.
