Sheffield drivers face miles of tailbacks after rush-hour 'police incident' closed M1

A rush hour closure of the M1 near Rotherham has caused miles of tailbacks this morning.

The southbound M1 was closed between Junction 31 for Aston and Junction 31 for Barlborough earlier today due to a ‘police-led incident’.

Despite two of the four lanes now re-open, there are 40 minute delays on the approach.

Highways England said queues are seven miles long, stretching back to Junction 1 of the M18 and Junction 33 of the M1.

The agency said: “Please allow extra journey time.”
