The roadworks are to allow roads maintenance contractor Amey to repair a landslip for Sheffield Council, and are expected to be in place until June 2.
It is one of three landslips on the A57 between Sheffield and Manchester.
Two other sections are down to one lane controlled by traffic lights, including near the summit of the Snake Pass and at Alport.
From today, Monday, April 20, the A57 near Rivelin Dams will close fully for six weeks.
Amey has stated that it was impossible to avoid or limit the closure.
Residents have been warned to expect ‘major disruption’ until June 2.
The company has suggested a 24-mile alternative route via the city centre, Ecclesall Road, Ringinglow Road, Hathersage and Bamford.
