'Lack of public transport to blame for rise of e-bikes' - Reader's letter

Matthew Smith from Hillsborough on the link between public transport and the rise of the e-bike...

The deluge of e-scooters and e-bikes on our roads is an inconvenience, but we must remember that this is down primarily to the lack of public transport in areas of Sheffield such as Tinsley and Darnall.

The economy of these areas relies on shift workers working through the night and at all hours god sends, hours which do not always match up with the availability of bus services, especially in areas such as Bawtry Road, Tinsley.

The failure of the government to legislate on the licensing of e-bikes and e-scooters is also to blame.

The solution must be to licence them alongside other motor vehicles or to provide much better public transport tailored to the needs of shift workers and anyone else forced to use e-bikes and e-scooters.

Penalising people who genuinely need them is wrong.
